Alisha- Registered Clinical Counsellor

“Grow through what you go through”

Alisha likes to call herself a “WHY” therapist. She believes that clients grow through their experiences starting from their “roots” (or their childhood). Alisha believes that growing through experiences that may have stemmed from traumatic events in life or maladaptive ways of being, are the pinnacle of a therapeutic experience. She is here to guide you on your journey to self-actualization and improved mental health.

Alisha brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to her practice. Alisha holds a Bachelor of Arts with an Honours in Psychology from the University of British Columbia Okanagan campus as well as a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology from Yorkville University. Alisha is a published author in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships where her work focused on mobile communication in romantic relationships. Since her work in her undergraduate degree, Alisha has been working the front line at her local crisis line, working in her local youth shelter, and is currently employed with an organization that works with people recovering from addictions. Alisha has been working in the mental health field since 2017, during which she has been attending school to become a certified clinical counsellor. Alisha is registered with the British Columbia Governing Body (BCACC) and has years of experience to support her work. Alisha’s experience working with vulnerable populations has taught her the compassion and non-judgement needed to support those with their mental health.

While the majority of Alisha’s career has centred around working with youth and young adult populations, she is open to working with all populations. Alisha specializes in working with anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, and substance use, but she also enjoys working through any topic that is important to a person’s story. While Alisha uses a psychodynamic approach as her foundation for counselling (the “why” approach), she integrates other forms of therapy best suited to her client’s needs. Some of these approaches include but are not limited to Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Narrative Therapy, and Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS).
Through personal experience with counselling and supporting others with their mental health, Alisha has developed a passion for the field. When she is not counselling, you can find Alisha at your local coffee shop reading a book or outside enjoying the sunshine.

Over the past eight years, Josie has worked with children, youth, and adults to work through these challenges. Josie holds a Bachelors of Education and previously worked as a teacher for the Central Okanagan School District and as an Inclusive Education Teacher for Kleos Open Learning. Josie has a love for creativity, movement, and expression and she integrates this passion into her counselling sessions through art therapy techniques. Josie aims to help you replace your own negative narratives with one filled with more self-love and understanding.

Josie’s professional approach centres around creating trust and personal agency in the counselling relationship. She understands the importance of “meeting clients” wherever they are in their journey without judgement. Luke – Registered Clinical Counsellor & Registered Social Worker

Luke comes from a background of Social Work and is a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) and a Registered Social Worker (RSW). He focuses on helping clients discover what it means for them to live authentically, and what is holding them back from doing so. His journey with mental health challenges has fueled his passion for helping others navigate paths toward their healing and self-discovery. He understands the deep complexities and emotional struggles we encounter while striving to create the life we want. “Healing” is nonlinear and means something different for everyone. This is why Luke embraces tenets of narrative therapy as his favourite tool in counselling because the focus is on one’s individual story. Through this approach, he collaborates with clients to explore and evaluate their personal stories and values, offering new perspectives and empowering them to rewrite their narratives in a way that promotes growth, stability, and self-compassion.

Luke blends various other therapeutic modalities into his sessions to work in tandem with his narrative therapy approach. This combination allows him to tailor sessions to meet individuals where they are at, with flexibility and comfort in mind. Each of us knows what it means to live authentically – we all want to be ourselves. Counselling with Luke offers a safe space to learn what is holding you back, and the skills you need to get to the life you want to live and thrive in your relationships. Most importantly, your relationship with yourself.

It is important to find a good fit with a counsellor and having learned from his own experiences as a client, Luke offers free consultation calls to ease anxiety and answer any questions you may have.

She believes everyone has a story that is worthy of being shared with someone who genuinely wants to listen. Maddie completed her bachelor’s degree in psychology at the University of British Columbia and completed her master’s degree in clinical counselling at Yorkville University. Over the past ten years, her work in community advocacy and family-based programs has equipped her with the tools to offer individualized support for the whole person. “I am not what happened to me, I am what I choose to become.”
― Carl Gustav Jung

As children we are born with every potential and capability within us. However, during our lives, we can go through experiences that wound us and if our nervous systems were not able to fully process what happened at the time, we can suffer from painful triggers that continue to affect us in our present day lives.

I work with clients to develop the skills they need to access the power within themselves to heal. Leslie – Registered Clinical Counsellor

I recognize how essential it is for my clients to feel heard and supported and to have their concerns addressed as quickly and effectively as possible. I view therapy as a collaborative process where I work with my clients to acquire the appropriate coping skills for their present difficulties while gaining the understanding and insight needed to handle future challenges. By working together, I will help you to build on your strengths and expand your skills to not only cope with the obstacles in life, but to optimize your well-being and to reach your full potential.

I am a registered clinical counsellor who uses an integrative approach, and therefore, counselling techniques are tailored to your needs and personal circumstances. I provide treatment in the following approaches: Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioural therapy (DBT), Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), Person-centered therapy, and Solution-focused therapy (SFBT). I work with adults experiencing many challenges, including anxiety, depression, grief, and trauma.

Whatever the reason you are seeking counselling, it can be helpful to have someone to talk with who is not going to judge, analyze, or tell you what to do. With my clients, I always aim to provide a safe space for therapy where we can discuss and explore a range of issues, have those difficult conversations, and where you can share your thoughts and feelings. Most importantly, this is a time where the focus is you.

Kate – Clinic Director/Registered Clinical Counsellor

As the founder of Next Step Counselling Group and a registered clinical counsellor (RCC), I believe an authentic connection between you and your therapist is the foundation for growth.

I am a new mother to two little girls and a boy, so I understand the challenges that life can throw our way, and I strive to bring that understanding to the counselling setting. I am passionate about helping young people—children, teenagers, and young adults (ages 6 to 20)—develop the skills to navigate life.

For school-aged children: I help clients navigate high school and all its challenges, including bullying and school performance/test anxiety.

For youth with autism spectrum disorders (ASD): I help clients learn the life skills they need to grow into confident, independent adults.

Kate worked with my son Jade, who has high functioning autism, for three years. At age 17, he was floundering as to what to do with his life and had many social issues. Kate has an acute sensitivity for guiding her clients and instilling confidence in them so they can get over life’s hurdles—especially when us parents don’t always know what direction to go next. My son now has a full-time job. He is happy, confident, and on his way to full independency. This gives me peace of mind for his life and future that I never would have thought possible back in 2016 (before we met Kate).  Kate will always have a special place in our hearts, and we are so grateful to have been one of the first families she counselled.

Testimonials

  • “I’ve been working with Christina for almost two years. She has helped me through my deepest depression and is now supporting me as an entrepreneur. She has helped me understand my mental illness and has given me many tools and resources to manage it. I can tell she really cares and genuinely wants to facilitate positivity in people’s lives. Her personalized sessions have been the most effective therapy I’ve ever received. I have recommended Christina to many others because I truly believe she can help them like she’s helped me.

  • “A wonderful experience, even with less frequent sessions I have regained understanding of myself and my struggles. I have also been given tools that prevent me from backsliding on my mental health journey. Kindness and patience are what you will find here.”

  • After many years of counselling I arrived at Next Step expecting the more of same, listening and guiding. However, Hailey’s approach, including using EMDR, was very different to previous therapy and empowered me. Within a few months I felt a huge difference that has been long-lasting since stopping a few months ago. I highly recommend Next Step! Thank you.”
