Katelyn Schouten – Registered Clinical Counsellor/Clinical Director
Katelyn is a compassionate and collaborative counsellor who believes that therapy should feel like a place where you can be yourself without judgment. She works with children, teens, youth, and adults, supporting clients through a variety of challenges including anxiety, trauma, emotional regulation, life transitions, relationship difficulties, and stress. She has a particular interest in working with folks with autism and neurodivergent individuals and values understanding each person as a whole rather than focusing only on their challenges.
A significant part of Katelyn’s work involves supporting children and young people. She understands that counselling with younger clients often looks different than traditional talk therapy and uses creative, engaging, and developmentally appropriate approaches to help build trust and connection. Whether through conversation, games, activities, movement, or other forms of expression, she works to create an environment where children and youth can feel comfortable sharing their experiences at their own pace.
Katelyn incorporates a Somatic Experiencing lens into her work, recognizing that our experiences are not only held in our thoughts and emotions but can also show up through the nervous system and body. She helps clients become more aware of these responses and develop skills for feeling more grounded, regulated, and connected. Her approach is trauma-informed and emphasizes safety, choice, autonomy, and working within each client’s individual capacity.
Katelyn is particularly passionate about supporting neurodivergent clients. She takes a strengths-based and affirming approach to autism and neurodivergence, recognizing that differences in communication, sensory processing, emotional regulation, and ways of experiencing the world are important parts of understanding the individual. She works alongside clients and families to identify what is helpful for them, while respecting each person’s autonomy and individuality.
With over 10 years of experience in the counselling field, Katelyn is passionate about supporting the growth and development of fellow counsellors. She offers both one-on-one clinical supervision and BCACC-approved group supervision, providing a collaborative and supportive space for clinicians to strengthen their skills, explore complex clinical work, develop confidence, and deepen their professional identity. Her approach to supervision is relational, reflective, and grounded in ethical, trauma-informed practice.
At the heart of Katelyn’s approach is the belief that clients are the experts in their own lives. She brings curiosity, warmth, humour, and genuine interest into the therapeutic relationship and works collaboratively with clients to identify what they want from counselling. Rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach, she draws from different therapeutic strategies and adapts her work to meet the needs of each person.
Katelyn is committed to continued learning and professional development and values creating a counselling environment that is inclusive, respectful, and welcoming to people from diverse backgrounds and life experiences. She hopes to provide clients with a space where they can better understand themselves, build on their strengths, and feel supported as they move toward the changes they want to make.
